Quilt for Marin

My little great-niece, Marin, likes turtles. I made a template of the turtles and then appliqued the turtles onto this quilt top. I'll quilt it when I get home. I used "thread painting" in the corner for grass. Hmmmmmm, should I put eyes on the turtles . . . ?

Scenes from Mercersburg Academy

This first picture is President Buchanon's house, now a B&B where Jeff and Josh stayed when they visited the school last month.

The rest are various pictures of the campus. Isn't the cathedral so totally impressive?

Good work, Josh, getting into this great school!

God willing and the creek don't rise

So other than a break from the rain when we toured Josh's school Saturday morning - more on that later - it started raining when we stopped in Mercersburg, and it rained and it rained and it rained and then it rained some more.

Check out the creek when we walked the dogs on Friday, here it is on Sunday. I love the rain and I was happy to stay in one place for a few days so I could do some sewing but we started getting a bit concerned when Harvey began listing to the right. By the time
we left Mercersburg, he was six inches in the mud. Jeff was convinced he would get stuck in the mud but Harvey pulled out of it like a champ!

When the rain lightened up on Tuesday, we took off. Into more mountains, of course.

Weston, West Virginia

Jeff here. Went into town today, and got a good look around as 4 new tires got installed on the Tacoma. Kind of a sad little town, with it's best days behind it, but a few interesting things to note. First off, like most of West Virginia, there are very few flat surfaces, so you get here through a series of roads twisting through steep valleys. Then you come upon something like this. It's an insanely huge lunatic asylum built during the civil war. It had to e well over a quarter of a mile long. The town is too small to have a bar, but it has this. Click on it to get an idea of just how ginormous it is.

Then there is the issue of non-sequiter businesses. I bought my tires today at a furniture and tire store. Really.

Last, we see why we only purchase seafood in coastal states. Those are some skanky skallops.

First result of frenzy

Jeff here. This is the result of less than 2 hours cutting and sewing the first top out of fabrics purchased during the Great Fabric Frenzy of '08. Sweet. I wonder how it would look with a landscape fabric?

A Bad Day for the Dow

So combining the hobbies of quilting and economic prognosticating, I came up with this quilt. I call it "A Bad Day for the Dow".

(Note that this is Jeff.)

Coming soon

Check back in April as we hit the road again. Harvey leaves the Keys for points north on an epic, but shorter, six weeks to Maine. Any advice on which route to take or what to see, oh faithful reader?

Well, well, well

So we ended up at the WalMart parking lot last night, but I have an excuse; the morons at Pleasure Island RV Park wouldn't allow Labrador Retrievers to stay there because they are a vicious breed. These are the same breed of idiot that attacked Iraq when we were attacked by a bunch of Saudis, but I digress.

Anyway, nothing says glamour like a night in the parking lot at WalMart, but we managed to pull it off by drawing the curtains, playing the Celtic Women CD and acting like we were actually in the beautiful Costa Rican highlands, and except for the reality reintroducing dog walk in the parking lot at 11 pm, I think we pulled it off.

We're now in Abbeville, Louisiana, the heart of Cajun Country, and being spoiled by the awesome cuisine and the Cajun/Louisiana accent that manages to sound genteel, instead of ignorant, nasty and racist, like the one in white Atlanta. But I digress.

We're getting to New Orleans in a few days, and I look forward to absurdly perfect meals. Then we're back to the coast and drifting through coastal Florida.

What a life.

Small world, part 3

So we’re here in Port Aransas, Texas which is way nicer than I expected and sticking around for a few days to enjoy the beach and catch up on laundry and some chores. We needed a hardware store to find a laundry hamper and a few other odds and ends. I’ve never been to Port Aransas, and not sure I knew it existed before the other day, and hadn’t been in Texas before this trip in over a decade, but I walked up to the checkout stand, and there was Steve, the guy who’s been cutting my hair for years in Key Largo!

We did some reminiscing, and it turns out he sold his barber shop and house in the spring and moved here. We have a new camera since the old one took a nutty, so if it works out I might post a shot.

Daddy and Sophie read the paper

Goodbye San Carlos, Adios Mexico

Well, we stretched it out as far as possible, but it's time to head north, first to Casa Grande, AZ then on to Vegas for Christmas with family and friends.

Here are some farewell pics of this beautiful place in Sonora.

Lovely San Carlos

Well, it's been a great 8 days here, but really hard to not stay a lot longer. I've been all around the world and this is one of the prettiest places I've ever been. Prejudiced of course by speaking Spanish and Mexican being our favorite kind of food. Stiil there are always those reminders that you're in Mexico like this. This is an actual road in Guymas, and there's just a big void down there.

And of course this sign that I translate as, "Don't introduce yourself to any babes" which seems counter to much of the Norteamericano in Mexico experience.

I love this mountain. I don't know why. It changes color by the minute all day long, towering hundreds of feet above us. This could not be any less different from the Florida Keys, or coastal Miane.

The Soggy Peso

Day 58

We found the Soggy Peso Bar at the end of a long pitted dirt road that was so bad we didn't think anything viable could possibly be at the end of it. Wrong! Lisa served us a sampler of shrimp ceviche, fish ceviche and crab tostadas with avocado. Fresh from the sea and sobrosa!

Paradiso!

This is Esmeralda Beach, our own personal paradise, and a short walk from our campground. Not another soul around!

We really like San Carlos. It has none of the dirt and poverty of Puerto Penasco, and oh! come to think of it, none of the Ugly American-type tourists. The Americans here appear to be cruisers and there is a small snowbird community, although they don't seem to be here yet.

Every evening while we are enjoying the sunset over the mountains, the produce man comes by. He has everything from lobster tails to cilantro, to tamales (still warm! which we had for dinner last night), to limes. We bought lobster tails for about $4 a piece and Jeff will grill some for lunch today.

He is recovering from a cold, caught from a wheezing kid in an internet cafe in Rocky Point. I have so far gone unscathed although when he coughs at night, I have this image a la CSI of a spray of germs attaching themselves to, well gross! never mind. Suffice to say, I haven't caught it yet - knock on wood. So he slumbers on this morning and I'm going for a walk.

If you are ever in the area, San Carlos is definitely worth a visit.
