God willing and the creek don't rise

So other than a break from the rain when we toured Josh's school Saturday morning - more on that later - it started raining when we stopped in Mercersburg, and it rained and it rained and it rained and then it rained some more.

Check out the creek when we walked the dogs on Friday, here it is on Sunday. I love the rain and I was happy to stay in one place for a few days so I could do some sewing but we started getting a bit concerned when Harvey began listing to the right. By the time
we left Mercersburg, he was six inches in the mud. Jeff was convinced he would get stuck in the mud but Harvey pulled out of it like a champ!

When the rain lightened up on Tuesday, we took off. Into more mountains, of course.

Weston, West Virginia

Jeff here. Went into town today, and got a good look around as 4 new tires got installed on the Tacoma. Kind of a sad little town, with it's best days behind it, but a few interesting things to note. First off, like most of West Virginia, there are very few flat surfaces, so you get here through a series of roads twisting through steep valleys. Then you come upon something like this. It's an insanely huge lunatic asylum built during the civil war. It had to e well over a quarter of a mile long. The town is too small to have a bar, but it has this. Click on it to get an idea of just how ginormous it is.

Then there is the issue of non-sequiter businesses. I bought my tires today at a furniture and tire store. Really.

Last, we see why we only purchase seafood in coastal states. Those are some skanky skallops.

First result of frenzy

Jeff here. This is the result of less than 2 hours cutting and sewing the first top out of fabrics purchased during the Great Fabric Frenzy of '08. Sweet. I wonder how it would look with a landscape fabric?

A Bad Day for the Dow

So combining the hobbies of quilting and economic prognosticating, I came up with this quilt. I call it "A Bad Day for the Dow".

(Note that this is Jeff.)

Coming soon

Check back in April as we hit the road again. Harvey leaves the Keys for points north on an epic, but shorter, six weeks to Maine. Any advice on which route to take or what to see, oh faithful reader?

Well, well, well

So we ended up at the WalMart parking lot last night, but I have an excuse; the morons at Pleasure Island RV Park wouldn't allow Labrador Retrievers to stay there because they are a vicious breed. These are the same breed of idiot that attacked Iraq when we were attacked by a bunch of Saudis, but I digress.

Anyway, nothing says glamour like a night in the parking lot at WalMart, but we managed to pull it off by drawing the curtains, playing the Celtic Women CD and acting like we were actually in the beautiful Costa Rican highlands, and except for the reality reintroducing dog walk in the parking lot at 11 pm, I think we pulled it off.

We're now in Abbeville, Louisiana, the heart of Cajun Country, and being spoiled by the awesome cuisine and the Cajun/Louisiana accent that manages to sound genteel, instead of ignorant, nasty and racist, like the one in white Atlanta. But I digress.

We're getting to New Orleans in a few days, and I look forward to absurdly perfect meals. Then we're back to the coast and drifting through coastal Florida.

What a life.

Small world, part 3

So we’re here in Port Aransas, Texas which is way nicer than I expected and sticking around for a few days to enjoy the beach and catch up on laundry and some chores. We needed a hardware store to find a laundry hamper and a few other odds and ends. I’ve never been to Port Aransas, and not sure I knew it existed before the other day, and hadn’t been in Texas before this trip in over a decade, but I walked up to the checkout stand, and there was Steve, the guy who’s been cutting my hair for years in Key Largo!

We did some reminiscing, and it turns out he sold his barber shop and house in the spring and moved here. We have a new camera since the old one took a nutty, so if it works out I might post a shot.
